Chemical reactions in the gaseous phase are promoted by fission products from a microporous nuclear fuel of large specific surface, under the influence of neutrons. The fuel consists of a dispersion of fissile material in a microporous carrier such as activated carbon, alumina, silica gel, kieselguhr, synthetic zeolites. It may be made by coprecipitation of fissile and carrier materials, by impregnation of a carrier with fissile material, or in other ways. Gaseous reactants are passed over the fuel in a nuclear reactor and the reaction products separated from the fission products. The reactants should be under pressure. |
