A cleansing composition comprises (a) a "soap," and (b) not more than 5% by weight of one or more compounds of the formula <FORM:0835473/III/1> wherein R stands for hydrogen or for an acyl group and the nucleus A may be substituted. The term "soap" embraces metal or organic base salts of long chain fatty hydrocarbon carboxylic or sulphonic acids wherein the long fatty hydrocarbon chain may be saturated or unsaturated and may be interrupted by, aromatic nuclei or by atoms other than carbon, for example oxygen or sulphur. The only specified ingredient (b) is 3-(51-nitro -21-furfurylidene) -oxindole. Ethanol, oil of lavender, glycerol, tragecanth, arachis oil, perfumes, diluents and flavouring agents may also be incorporated. The compositions may take the form of solid cakes, powders, creams, pastes or liquids. Specified active ingredient is 3 - (51 - nitro - 21 - furfurylidene) oxindole. Perfumes, diluents, and flavouring agents may also be incorporated. The composition may be in the form of toothpastes, vanishing creams, medicated soft soaps or other semi-solid cream or paste-like compositions or in the form of linaments, tinctures or other liquid compositions.
