titleOfInvention Antibacterial compositions
abstract A cleansing composition comprises (a) a "soap," and (b) not more than 5% by weight of one or more compounds of the formula <FORM:0835473/III/1> wherein R stands for hydrogen or for an acyl group and the nucleus A may be substituted. The term "soap" embraces metal or organic base salts of long chain fatty hydrocarbon carboxylic or sulphonic acids wherein the long fatty hydrocarbon chain may be saturated or unsaturated and may be interrupted by, aromatic nuclei or by atoms other than carbon, for example oxygen or sulphur. The only specified ingredient (b) is 3-(51-nitro -21-furfurylidene) -oxindole. Ethanol, oil of lavender, glycerol, tragecanth, arachis oil, perfumes, diluents and flavouring agents may also be incorporated. The compositions may take the form of solid cakes, powders, creams, pastes or liquids. Specification 809,691 is referred to.ALSO:An antiseptic and antibacterial cleansing composition comprises as active ingredient not more than 5% by weight of one or more compounds of the formula <FORM:0835473/VI/1> wherein R stands for hydrogen or for an acyl group and wherein the nucleus A may optionally bear substituents together with a soap. By the term soap is meant a mineral salt or an organic base salt of a long chain fatty hydrocarbon acid which is a carboxylic acid or a sulphonic acid wherein the long fatty hydrocarbon chain may be saturated or unsaturated and may be interrupted by aromatic nuclei or by atoms other than carbon for example by oxygen or sulphur. Specified active ingredient is 3 - (51 - nitro - 21 - furfurylidene) oxindole. Perfumes, diluents, and flavouring agents may also be incorporated. The composition may be in the form of toothpastes, vanishing creams, medicated soft soaps or other semi-solid cream or paste-like compositions or in the form of linaments, tinctures or other liquid compositions. Specification 809,691 is referred to.
