abstract The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0825562/IV (b)/1> wherein m is one or two, R1 is hydrogen or methyl and R11 is hydrogen or a methyl or an oxo group and the preparation thereof by condensing a nitrocycloalkane of the general formula <FORM:0825562/IV (b)/2> with a compound of the general formula <FORM:0825562/IV (b)/3> wherein R is a methyl or a lower alkoxy group (one to eight carbon atoms), to form a compound of the general formula <FORM:0825562/IV (b)/4> and reductively cyclizing the formed compound to give a spiro-pyrrolidine of the invention. In examples, nitro-cyclohexane is condensed with methyl acrylate in the presence of benzyl-trimethylammonium hydroxide to yield methyl b - (1 - nitrocyclohexyl)-propionate which is hydrogenated in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst to give spiro-[cyclohexane-1,21-pyrroli-done-51], and which in turn is reduced by lithium aluminium hydride to form spiro-[cyclo-hexane-1,21-pyrrolidine]. Similarly is prepared methyl b - (1 - nitrocyclopentyl) - propionate, spiro - [cyclopentane - 1,21 - pyrrolidone - 51] and spiro - [cyclopentane - 1,21 - pyrrolidine], the reduction to the pyrrilidone being carried out by hydrogenation under pressure in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst.
