abstract Casings for sausage and similar products are made by coating a cellulosic tubing of non-woven, non-knitted sheet material with a filmforming vinylidene resin containing at least 5 per cent by weight of vinylidene chloride, inflating the coated tubing, treating it in the inflated state until the coating is substantially tack-free, and then heating it in the inflated state to a temperature and for a time sufficient to cause the coating to adhere tenaciously to the tubing but insufficient to harm the coating or tubing. Suitable resins are those formed by copolymerizing at least 5 per cent of vinylidene chloride with vinyl esters, methyl vinyl ketone, methyl isopropenyl ketone, acrylic esters, styrene, vinyl naphthalene, ethyl vinyl ether butyl vinyl ether, N-vinyl phthalimide, N-vinyl succinimide, N-vinyl carbazole, methylene diethyl malonate, itaconic acid or mixtures thereof. The coating may be applied from a solution, dispersion, emulsion, plastisol, organosol or melt, by dipping, spraying, extrusion or other known method. Suitable base tubing may be made from regenerated cellulose or cellulose ethers which may be reinforced with fibres such as those employed in the production of yoshino paper, rice paper and the like; hemp, rayon, flax; nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, polymers of or containing acrylonitrile, and the like. The base tubing may be transparent, opacified, dyed, coloured or printed with informative or decorative material.
