titleOfInvention | Block copolymers of formaldehyde and process for preparing same |
abstract | Block copolymers comprising 99-10 per cent by weight of one or more polyoxymethylene units, having a molecular weight of at least 4000, chemically united to 1-90 per cent by weight of one or more different polymeric units which have a molecular weight at least 500, are soluble in organic solvents and contain active hydrogen atoms, as determined by the Zerewitinoff method, are made by polymerizing substantially pure formaldehyde in the presence of one or more polymerization initiators in an organic solvent solution of the different polymer. The process may be operated continuously. Block copolymers containing free hydroxyl groups may be acetylated. The different polymer may be polytetramethylene glycol of M.W. 7000, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and crotonic acid, a polymer prepared from polytetramethylene glycol of M.W. at least 500 by cyanoethylation and reduction, a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and vinyloxyethylamine, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and allyl acetoacetate, a copolymer of vinyloxyethylamine and isobutyl methacrylate, a stearic acid or castor oil modified glyceryl triphthalate resin, a polyethylene glycol phthalate, cellulose acetate having a degree of substitution of 2.9, N-isobutylpolyhexamethylene adipamide, polydimethyl siloxane, polydioxane, polythiols, reduced ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymers, reductively aminated ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymers, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, a hydrogenated methyl methacrylate/acrylonitrile copolymer, a hydrogenated butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer, a hydrogenated styrene/cyanoethylacrylate copolymer or an acrylonitrile/methallylacetoacetate copolymer. Initiators mentioned are the trihydrocarbonphosphines, arsines, and stibenes described in Specification 742,135, the tertiary amine-containing polymers described in Specification 744,336, the metal carbonyls described in Specification 766,524, the metal organic compounds disclosed in Specification 766,629, and the "onium" salts described in Specification 793,673. Dimethyldi-(70 per cent octadecyl, 30 per cent hexadecyl) ammonium acetate is the exemplified initiator. The solvent may be a C5 to C10 alkane, cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, of isobutane. The acetylated copolymer may be stabilized by incorporating therein 0.1 per cent of di-beta-naphthyl-p-phenylene diamine and 1 per cent of an alcohol-soluble polyamide. The copolymers may be made into fibres, films, and bristles. Specification 753,299 also is referred to. |
