titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to condensation products of formaldehyde and monomeric compounds |
abstract | 550,925. Synthetic recess modified with polyisocyanate. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. July 25, 1941, No. 9452. Convention date, July 25, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Modified phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde and sulphonamide-formaldehyde resinous condensation products are obtained by carrying out the condensation reaction in the presence of a polyisocyanate or thioisocyanate. Resinous condensation of the following bodies with formaldehyde may be thus given improved baking characteristics and water resistance-ohydroxy-benzyl alcohol, o-cresol, m-cresol, p-cresol, p-phenylphenol, xylenols, diphenylol propane, resorcinol, urea, guanidine, monomethylolurea, acetyl urea, phenyl urea, methyl urea, thiourea, o, m, and p-toluenesulphonamide tetrahydronaphthalenesulphonamide, adipamide. Pigments, mica, whiting, alumina, synthetic or natural resins (rosins, ester gums, copal, kauri, congo, manilla, damar, shellac), ), drying &c. oils, waxes, (carnauba, beeswax, paraffin, spermaceti, montan) inhibitors (pine oil, hydroquininone, guaiacol, creosote, soya lecithin (mineral oils may be mixed with the reacting materials. In examples (1) 100 parts p-phenylphenol formaldehyde resin ("Bakelite" XR 254) dissolved in 100 parts toluene are mixed with 9 parts hexamethylene diisocyanate and 0.1 parts benzoyl peroxide. A film of the mixture baked for one hour at 100‹C. gives a product of improved hardness, (3) a urea-formaldehyde resin prepared by heating one part dimethylolurea and 2 parts isobutanol in presence of phthalic acid while eliminating water is dissolved in dioxane and the solution mixed with a xylene solution of a castor oil modified glyceryl phthalate resin and with 5 parts hexamethylene diisocyanate, a film of the mixture being baked for one hour at 127‹C. Specifications 547,672 and 548,807 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes the modification by isocyanates of the resinous condensation products of the following substances with formaldehyde-anisole, α and #-naphthol ethyl ether, diphenyl ether α-naphthol, #-naphthol, methyl and ethyl ethers of 1:3:5 xylenol, salicylic acid, o-methoxybenzoic acid, ethyl salicylate, phenoxy acetic acid, glycol monophenyl ethers, diphenylol cyclohexane, dithiophenylol propane, thiophenol, thiocresol, monochlorophenol, catechol, pyrogallol, formamide, acetamide, naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, acenaphthene, chloronaphthalene, #-naphthalene sulphonic acid, acetone, cyclohexanone, cyclopentanone, naphthalene sulphonamide, chlorobenzene sulphonamide, nitrobenzene sulphonamide, aniline, o-toluedine, α and #-naphthylamine, benzylaniline, urethane, hexamethylene diurea, salicyl aldehyde and acetaldehyde. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
