abstract | 1474147 Powder coating compositions KANSAI PAINT CO Ltd 23 June 1975 [26 June 1974] 26503/75 Headings C3B and C3G A thermosetting powder coating composition comprises: (A) a graft copolymer of (a) 10-40% by wt. of a linear polyester having number average M.W. 600-3000 and containing one terminal ethylenic double bond, (b) 5-30% by wt. of glyeidyl acrylate and/or methacrylate, (c) 10-85% by wt. of at least one acrylic ester CH 2 =C(R<SP>1</SP>)COOR<SP>2</SP> in which R<SP>1</SP> is H or CH 3 , R<SP>2</SP> is C 1-4 alkyl, cyclohexyl or R<SP>3</SP> being H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , and optionally (d) up to 40% by wt. of (meth)acrylonitrile, styrene or C 1-4 alkyl styrene; the graft copolymer has a softening point 70-110‹C. and a number average M.W. 2000-30,000; and (B) at least one polycarboxylic acid or anhydride present so as to provide 0À6-1À2 carboxyl equivalents per epoxide equivalent of (A). In an example a polyester (M.W. 1750) is first prepared from 12- hydroxystearic acid which is then reacted with glycidyl methacrylate so as to obtain terminal unsaturation and a M.W. of about 1890. A graft copolymer is prepared from 700 g. of this unsaturated polyester, 150 g. of methyl methacrylate, 150 g. of n-butyl methacrylate, 200 g. of styrene and 150 g. of glycidyl methacrylate. The product has M.W. 5500 and a softening point of 87‹ C. Exemplified curing agents are adipic acid, sebacic acid and dodecanedioic acid. |
