titleOfInvention | Detergent compatible fabric softening and anti-static compositions |
abstract | 1428061 Detergents containing fabric softening and anti-static agents PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 15 Feb 1974 [16 Feb 1973] 6931/74 Heading C5D [Also in Divisions D1- D2] Fabrics are softened, rendered anti-static and in some embodiments cleaned by treatment with a composition comprising (a) a smectite type clay having a particle size below 50 microns and an ion exchange capacity of at least 50 milliequivalents per 100 gms.; (b) a water-insoluble quaternary ammonium antistatic agent of formula where R 1 , R 2 are C 10 to C 22 hydrocarbyl groups, R 3 , R 4 are C 1 to C 4 hydrocarbyl groups, n is an integer from 1 to 3 and X is an anion; and (c) from 1 to 40% of a compatibilizing agent selected from (i) a fatty acid having 8 to 30 carbon atoms in its saturated or unsaturated chain, (ii) benzene mono, di or tricarboxylic acid containing 0 to 2 hydroxyl groups, and (iii) a secondary or tertiary amine of formula where R 10 is a C 1 to C 22 alkyl group, R 20 and R 30 are C 1 to C 10 alkyl groups, or R 20 is a C 1 to C 10 alkyl group and R 30 is hydrogen, Y is CONH 2 , CON(R 40 ) 2 or COOH where R 40 is a C 1 to C 4 alkyl group or a hydrogen atom. A non-detergent composition contains 2 to 90% by weight of (a), 1 to 40% (b) and 1 to 40% (c). Detergent compositions contain 1 to 50% (a), 0À5 to 15% (b), 0À5 to 15% (c), 2 to 30% of anionic, nonionic, ampholytic and/or zwitterionic detergent (d) and 0 to 60% of organic or inorganic detergent builder salt (e). Specified clays are montmorillonite, volchonskoite, nontronite, hectorite, saponite, sauconite and vermiculite. They have a particle size which cannot be pecined tactilely (i.e. below 50 microns) and are thus impalpable. They have the basic formula and modified by cation substitution. Specified anti-static agents are ditallowdimethylammonium chloride, bis-docosyldimethylammonium chloride, dicetyldimethylammonium chloride, didodecyldimethylammonium chloride, ditallowdimethylammonium bromide, dioleoyldimethylammonium hydroxide, ditallowdiethylammonium chloride, ditallowdipropylammonium bromide, ditallowbutylammonium fluoride, cetyldecylmethylethylammonium chloride, bis-(ditallowdimethylammonium) sulphate and tris-(ditallowdimethylammonium phosphate. Lists of components (c) to (e) are given. Compositions containing components (a) to (e) are used at a concentration of 0À12% by weight in a domestic washing machine to launder, soften and reduce the static build-up in fabrics, particularly cotton and cotton/polyester fabrics. |
