titleOfInvention Preparation of water-soluble salts of sulphoalkyl esters of ª‡,ª‰-unsaturated carboxylic acids
abstract 1,148,285. Sulphoalkyl-α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid salts. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 26 Oct., 1967 [26 Oct., 1966], No. 48771/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] A water-soluble salt of a sulphoalkyl ester of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid is prepared in aqueous solution by reacting a water-soluble salt of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acid with 1,4- butane sultone or a sultone of general formula where R=H or methyl but at least two R groups are H. The unsaturated carboxylic acids used in the examples are acrylic, itaconic, α- ethyl acrylic, atropic, α-chloroacrylic, cinnamic, maleic, α-methyleneglutaric and citraconic acids and the sultones employed are 1,3-propane sultone, 1,4-butane sultone and 2,4-butane sultone. The water-soluble salts are preferably the K or, more particularly, the Na salts. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 840,908.
