titleOfInvention 2-phenylbenzoxazole compounds, their preparation, and their use in cosmetic compositions
abstract 1,131,405. 2-Phenylbenzoxazoles. CIBA Ltd. 4 April, 1966 [6 April, 1965], No. 14931/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions A5 and C3] The invention comprises 2-phenylbenzoxazole derivatives of formula in which (I), one and only one of U 2 , U 3 , V 1 , V 2 or V 3 represents -COOA, -COOR, -CONR 2 R 3 in which A is hydrogen, an alkali metal ion, an ammonium ion or an amine salt ion, R 1 represents a hydrocarbon or polyalkylene residue (up to 20 C), R 2 and R 3 hydrogen or alkyl (up to 20 C) with R 2 and R 3 containing not more than 20 C, and (II), one to three residues of U 1 to U 4 and V 1 to V 5 , when not having significance under (I) denote an alkyl group (up to 18 C), an alkoxy group (up to 4 C), a halogen atom, or when A is not hydrogen, a hydrogen atom, and the residual U and V each denote a hydrogen atom. The compounds of which many are listed are prepared by reacting equimolar amounts of an o-hydroxyaminobenzene with a benzene monocarboxylic acid or halide. Particular compounds are in which one of U 2 and V 3 denotes a group -COOR 1 or -CONR 2 R 3 , in which R 1 represents a hydrocarbon residue or polyalkylene oxide residue (up to 20 C), and R 2 and R 3 are as above, and of formula in which the amine salt ion is represented by trialkanolamines The compounds are suitable as ultra-violet absorbers for cosmetic purposes, and compositions are also described.
