abstract Oils and fats are obtained from solid animal and vegetable materials by passing the materials in sequence through a crusher (10, 11) a heat exchanger (19), where water is preferably added to the materials, a disintegrator (23), a second heat exchanger (27), and a centrifuge (30). Each heat exchanger comprises a jacketed trough enclosing a variable speed, hollow, heated screw conveyer, and may be of the kind described in Specification 883,051. The disintegrator (23) utilizes steam impingement, and is followed by a centrifuge (24) which separates water, fats and oils. The pressure in the exchanger (27) is controlled by an open impeller centrifugal pump which delivers the material to a flash vessel (29), followed by the centrifuge (30), dryer (31) and a second disintegrator (33). The centrifuges (24, 30) deliver separated liquids to a tank (26) which is followed by a centrifuge (35) from which separated water may be pumped to the exchanger (19).
