titleOfInvention New platinum-containing complexes useful at catalysts in the production of organosilicon compounds
abstract The invention comprises compounds prepared by heating chloroplatinic acid with at least two moles per gram atom of platinum of (a) an alcohol ROH, or (b) an ether ROR, or (c) an aldehyde RCHO, or (d) any mixture of these, at 60-90 DEG C. under reduced pressure until the product contains 2-3.5 atoms of chlorine per atom of platinum. R represents an alkyl group containing at least 4 carbon atoms, an aralkyl group, or an alkyl group substituted by a group R1O, where R1 is free of aliphatic unsaturation and may be a hydrocarbon group, or contain C, H and O atoms, the oxygen being present in hydroxy or ether groups only. The product appears to be a complex containing PtCl2 and aldehyde and ether molecules. In examples products are derived from anydrous or hexa-hydrated chloroplatinic acid and octyl, myristyl, n-pentyl, iso-amyl, and butyl alcohols, and from di-octyl ether, octyl aldehyde, and a mixture of these, and from a polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether, using temperatures of 65-90 DEG C. and pressures of 15-30 mm. The compounds are used to catalyze addition of of <FORM:1041082/C2/1> groups across the multiple bonds of aliphatic unsaturated compounds (see Division C3).ALSO:Silicon compounds containing at least one Si-H group per molecule, and not more than two hydrogen atoms attached to any one silicon atom, are reacted with compounds, including silicon compounds, containing aliphatic unsaturation, in the presence of a catalyst which is obtained by heating chloroplatinic acid with (a) an alcohol, ROH, or (b) an ether, ROR, or (c) an aldehyde, RCHO, or (d) any mixture of these (see Division C2). The group R is alkyl of at least 4 C atoms, or aralkyl, or is alkyl substituted by a group R1O-, where R1 is free of aliphatic unsaturation, and contains only carbon and hydrogen, or carbon, hydrogen, and hydroxyl or ether groups. The catalyst appears to be a complex containing PtCl2 and aldehyde and ether molecules, and should contain 2-3.5 atoms of chlorine per atom of platinum. In examples, catalysts are prepared from anhydrous or hexahydrated chloroplatinic acid and octyl, myristyl, n-pentyl, isoamyl and butyl alcohols, polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether, di-octyl ether, octyl aldehyde, and a mixture of these last two. The catalyst derived from octyl alcohol is dissolved in toluene and used in quantities providing 1 mole of platinum per 103-106 moles of ethylenic unsaturation in the preparation of organosilicon compounds by the following additions: a methyl hydrogen polysiloxane to a methyl vinyl polysiloxane; a methyl phenyl hydrogen polysiloxane to a methyl phenyl vinyl polysiloxane; methyl dichlorosilane to vinyl acetate; methyl dichlorosilane to cyclohexene; methyl dichlorosilane to heptafluoropentene-1; methyl dichlorosilane to methyl methacrylate; phenyl dichlorosilane to methyl methacrylate. The first of these is also catalyzed by each of the other catalysts prepared.
