Tertiary amine oxides are prepared by reacting a tertiary amine of the formula R1R2R3N (where R1, R2 and R3 are each C1- 6 alkyl groups) with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an alkali metal phosphate and an alkali metal bicarbonate. The bicarbonate may be prepared in situ from an alkali metal carbonate. |
