titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE ELECTROCHEMICAL OXIDATION OF AM (VII) TO AM (VI), USEFUL FOR SEPARATING AMERICIUM FROM SOLUTIONS FOR THE REHABILITATION OF USED NUCLEAR FUELS
abstract The subject of the invention is a process for the electrochemical oxidation of Am (III) to Am (VI), which can be used to separate americium from solutions for reprocessing spent nuclear fuels. The process consists of adding to the aqueous nitric solution (17) containing Am (III) a) a heteropolyanion capable of complexing americium, such as potassium phosphotungstate, and b) the Ag (II) ion to oxidize Am (III) by being converted into Ag (I), and subjecting the solution to electrolysis under conditions such that the Ag (II) ion is electrochemically regenerated from the Ag (I) ion obtained in of this oxidation. After oxidation of Am (III) to Am (VI), the latter can be extracted in a suitable organic solvent.
