abstract Cosmetic composition containing, as compound filtering UV rays of wavelengths 280-380 nm, a 5-benzylidene 3-oxa cyclopentanone of formula: (CF DRAWING IN BOPI) where R1, R2, R3 and R4 denote C1 - alkyl C8, aralkyl, aryl or else R1 and R2 and / or R3 and R4, together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, form a 5 or 6 membered saturated ring, R5, R6 and R7 represent H, C1 -C8 alkyl , C2 -C8 alkenyl, C1 -C1 alkoxy, C2 -C8 alkenyloxy, C2 -C1 2 acyloxy, benzyloxy or -COOR1 0 where R1 0 is C1 -C8 alkyl, hydrogen, an alkali or alkaline metal -terreux or a radical derived from an amine, one of the substituents R5, R6 and R7 possibly also representing a radical: (CF DRAWING IN BOPI) where R1, R2, R3 and R4 have the meanings above. This composition can be a protective composition for the human epidermis or the hair or for sun protection. New compounds of formula I where R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6 and R7 have the same meanings, R6 being different from hydrogen, methyl and methoxy.
