titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE ALKYLATION OF PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS TO PRODUCE ORTHO- AND PARA-MONO-ALKYL PHENOLS AND 2,4 AND 2,6 DIALKYL PHENOLS
abstract Production of ortho- and para-monoalkylated phenols and 2,4- and 2,6-dialkylphenols from phenolic compounds in good yields. The phenolic compound is reacted with an aldehyde having 1 to 10 carbon atoms and a secondary aliphatic amine having a basic dissociation constant of less than about 3.6 at 25 degrees C. The reaction is carried out in the liquid phase with at least one. stoichiometric amount of the phenolic compound, the aldehyde and the secondary amine, or with an excess of the phenolic compound relative to the stoichiometric amounts of aldehyde and secondary amine. The reaction is carried out between 0 degrees and 25 degrees C approximately and an aminoalkylated phenol is thus obtained, which is brought into contact with hydrogen in the presence of a metal catalyst at a temperature of approximately 120 to 140 degrees C, at a hydrogen pressure at most equal to approximately 10 kg / cm ** 2, in order to produce a mixture of ortho-monoalkylphenol, para-monalkylphenol, and 2,4 and 2,6-alkylphenols. Application to obtaining ortho-monoalkylphenol, paramonoalkylphenol, 2,4-dialkylphenol and 2,6-dialkylphenol.
