abstract Heterocyclic alkoxyamines as regulators in controlled radical polymerization processes. They are polymerizable compositions comprising: a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer or oligomer, and b) a compound of formula (Ia) or (Ib) where R {sub, 1}, R {sub, 2}, R {sub, 3}, R {sub, 4}, R {sub, 5}, R {sub, 6}, R {sub, 7}, X and Z {sub, 1} have the meaning expressed in the description and in the claims. Another object of the invention is a process for the polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, the use of heterocyclic alkoxyamine compounds for controlled polymerization, intermediate N-oxyl derivatives, a composition of these derivatives with ethylenically unsaturated monomers and a free radical initiator , as well as a procedure for polymerization. The compounds of formula (Ia) or (Ib) are used for the polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers or oligomers.
