abstract The invention relates inter alia to a process for the sterilization of a polymerizable monomer. In this method, a mixture (I) is prepared containing at least the polymerizable monomer, a compound (a) and a compound (b), wherein compound (a) is selected from compounds (a1) represented by the general formula (I )nin which R1, R2, R3 and R4 independently of one another are H, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl radical, a halogen radical, a nitrorest or a cyano radical, compounds (a2) which are selected from the group consisting of dimers of the compounds ( a1), and compounds (a3) selected from the group consisting of dialkyl dicarbonates and compound (b) is selected from the group consisting of water and alcohols, wherein the proportion of compound (b) is not more than 2 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the mixture.
