A method for oxidizing an aromatic compound possesssingnat least one alkyl substituent by using a catalyst avoidsncontaining a corrosive bromine ion, remains stably withoutnbeing decomposed even in an oxidizing atmospherfe, and permitsnreclamation is provided. An aromatic compound possessing atnleast one alkyl substituent is oxidized by using a catalystnwhich has at least one kind of element selected from the groupnconsisting of phosphorus, silicon, and germanium as a heteronatom and at least one kind of element selected from the groupnconsisting of molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, and niobiumnas a poly atom and comprises a heteropoly-oxometalate nionnpossessing two defective structure site and at least one kindnof element selected from the group of elements of Periodsn4 ~ 6 of Groups IB, VA,VIIA, and VIII in the Periodic Tablenof the Elements. |
