A magnetic recording medium is disclosed, whichncomprises a support having thereon a substantiallynnonmagnetic lower layer and a magnetic layer comprising anferromagnetic metal powder or a ferromagnetic hexagonalnferrite powder dispersed in a binder formed on the lowernlayer, which is a magnetic recording medium for recordingnsignals having areal recording density of from 0.17 to 2 Gnbit/inch 2 , wherein the coercive force of the magnetic layernis 1,800 Oe or more, the average long axis length of thenferromagnetic metal powder is 0.15 µm or less, and thenaverage particle size of the ferromagnetic hexagonal ferritenpowder is 0.10 µm or less; or wherein the dry thickness ofnthe magnetic layer is from 0.05 to 0.30 µm, m is fromn10.0 × 10 -3 to 1.0 × 10 -3 emu/cm 2 , and the coercive force ofnthe magnetic layer is 1,800 Oe or more. n The object of the present invention is to providena magnetic recording medium which is markedly improved innelectromagnetic characteristics, particularly, high densitynrecording characteristics, and is excellent in durability:nand to provide a high capacity magnetic recording medium, innparticular, a disc-like magnetic recording medium, havingna high recording capacity of from o,17 to 2 Gbit/inch 2 . |
