A polyvinyl ether compound (including one having a specified terminal group) having constitutional units each represented by general formula (I) wherein R₃, R₄ and R₅ represent each H or alkyl; R⁶ represents alkylen; R⁷ represents alkyl; and k represents 0 to 10; and a process for producing the same by polymerizing a vinyl ether monomer in the presence of a specified initiator comprising a combination of a Brönsted acid, Lewis acid or organometallic compound with an adduct of a carboxylic acid with water, alcohol, phenol, acetal or vinyl ether. The compound is useful as lubricating oil, etc. A process for producing an ether compound by the reaction of an acetal or ketal represented by general formula (II) with hydrogen in the presence of an acidic substance and a solid catalyst having a hydrogenating ability to convert the group R³³O- or R³⁴O- into a hydrogen atom. |
