A chimeric or totally foreign immunoglobulin is obtained from cells or a body fluid of a transgenic animal in the germ line of which has been introduced genetic material which codes for at least part of an immunoglobulin of foreign origin or which can be rearranged to encode an immunoglobulin repertoire, that is, drawn from a different animal source. Fully human immunoglobulins can for example be produced from a transgenic mouse, possibly in response to an immunogen subsequently introduced into the mouse. |
