An alumina-titania composite, suitable for catalysts and catalyst supports, is made by controlled coprecipitation of the alumina and titania constituents of the composite. The composite contains from about 0.5% up to about 50% by weight titania (based on the total weight of the composite). The titania content of the composite, due to the controlled precipitation, is distributed throughout the composite in such a uniform manner that the average size of the titania particles is below about 50 angstroms and the individual titania particles cannot be observed by X-ray diffraction examination of the calcined composite. Due to the uniform distribution of the titania content in the composite, the composite exhibits significantly improved catalytic properties in comparison to conventionally prepared alumina-titania compounds. |
