IMPROVING THE BIOCOMPATIBILITY OF SOLID SURFACES. |
abstract |
The biocompatibility of biomaterials having solid surfaces is improved by coating them with biocompatible agents. The method of modifying the solid surface to improve biocompatibility uses molecules of a biocompatible agent and a fraction of chemical bonds having a photochemically reactive group capable, upon activation, of covalently binding to the solid surface and having a different reactive group which, when activated, can bind covalently to separate the molecules from the biocompatible agent. One group is not sensitive to activation by a stimulus to which the other group is sensitive. The method includes applying a stimulus to sequentially activate a group and covalently bond the reactive group different from the binding moiety to the molecules of the biocompatible agent and photochemically covalently bind the binding moiety to the solid surface with a density of sufficient population to allow the molecules of the biocompatible agent to effectively protect the solid surface and form a biocompatible surface. |
