titleOfInvention Method for recovering americium from irradiated nuclear-fuel waste
abstract Trivalent americium is oxidized (e.g. sodium persulfate or electrochemically). In alkaline solution, it is adjusted to pentavalent americium (e.g. by reducing excess six- or seven-valued americium). Lanthanides are complexed in alkaline solution (e.g. by EDTA, which prevents precipitation) and extracted selectively from pentavalent americium (e.g. by oxine in chloroform). The remaining americium is isolated from the alkaline solution which is free from trivalent lanthanides by known methods or after reduction to trivalent americium analogously to the lanthanides.
