abstract Fused N-phenylsulfonyl-N'-pyrimidinyl and triazinyl ureas of the general formula and the salts of these compounds with amines, alkali or alkaline earth metal bases or with quaternary ammonium bases have good pre- and postemergent-selective herbicidal and growth-regulating properties.n n n In this formula, Z is oxygen or sulfur; E nitrogen or -CH-; R, hydrogen, halogen, nitro, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 haloalkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 haloalkoxy, C 1 -C 4 alkoxycarbonyl, C 1 -C 4 alkylithio, C 1 -C 4 alkylsulfinyl. C 1 -C 4 alkylsulfonyl or CrCralkoxyalkoxy; R 2 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl or C 1 -C 3 alkoxy; R 3 and R 4 are independently hydrogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, C 1 -C 4 -haloalkoxy, C 1 -C 4 haloalkylthio, C 1 -C 4 alkylthio, halogen , C 2 -C 5 alkoxyalkoxy or -NR 5 R 4 , where R 5 and R 6 represent hydrogen or C 1 -C 4 alkyl, and A represents an optionally substituted 3 or 4 atom bridge, the 1st up to 2 oxygen. Contains sulfur or nitrogen atoms and which, together with the carbon atoms binding them, forms a non-aromatic 5- to 6-membered heterocycle, where two oxygen atoms are separated by at least one carbon atom and oxygen and sulfur atoms are only connected to one another if the sulfur atom as -SO - or -SO 2 group is present.
