abstract Α / β-substituted, unsaturated γ-butyrolactones of the general formula I are claimed: <IMAGE> R¹, R², R³ = H or alkyl (C1-7), at least one of these radicals being an alkyl radical and the sum of the C atoms in is 1-7, preferably α / β- (2-decenyl) -γ-butyrolactone. To prepare the compounds, an olefin of the formula II <IMAGE> (R¹, R², R³ in the abovementioned meaning) which has at least one H atom in the allyl position, with maleic anhydride at about 210-240 ° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere in an autoclave is used in the first stage heated for several hours. The corresponding α- (2-alkenyl) succinic anhydride is formed in an ene reaction. This is reduced in the second stage with sodium borohydride to the mixture of the structural isomers of α / β-substituted γ-buturolactones (I).
