abstract Process for the preparation of a-methyl-substituted ketones by reacting the corresponding non-methyl-substituted ketones with formaldehyde under hydrogenating conditions. The reaction succeeds in a simple manner and with good yields if phosphates of zirconium, hafnium, titanium or tin are used as catalysts which contain metallic palladium deposited on these phosphates. The process products are valuable intermediates for the production of dyes, crop protection agents or pharmaceuticals.
