For the preparation of compounds of the general formula wherein X is an OH group and X 1 represents a hydrogen atom or an OH group, in particular luciferin, demethylated 2-chloro-mono- or. -di-methoxybenzothiazole by reaction with iodotrimethylsilane or a mixture of phenyltrimethylsilane and iodine and by hydrolysis of the silyl derivative formed under mild conditions, the halogen atom being exchanged for the cyano group in the 2-position before or after the action of the organosilicon compound, and the resulting 2 -Cyano-mono or -dihydroxybenzothiazole with D-cysteine.
