A compsn. consists of particles of a polymethacrylate and/or polyacrylate base, contg. >=1 antibiotic (I), specifically gentamycin, and >=1 amino acid (II), specifically glycine. Pref. (II) is 0.3-5 esp., about 1 wt. %. The particles have dia. 1-20 mm. and may be discrete, or joined together, at least partly, by threads or filaments. Esp., for use as cements for bone surgery, e.g. in fixing endoprotheses, but also for making implants and for treating post-operative osteomyelitis. (II) improves liberation of (I), i.e. (I) is released at a nearly constant rate, which declines only slowly, over a long period. (II) does not affect the cement quality and has no cytotoxic effects. |
