New mixed F-contg. phosphate esters comprise 20-55 wt. % of triesters of formula (I). 10-60 wt. % of diesters of formula (II) and 1-55 (pref. 1-10) wt. % of monoesters of formula (III), where CnF2n+1(CH2)m(OCH2CHR1)zO 3P=O=(I) CnF2n+1(CH2)m(OCH2CHR1)zO 2P(O)OM=(II) CnF2n+1-(CH2)m(OCH2CHR1)zO P(O)(OM)2=(III) (where R1 is H or Me; n = 6-12; M is H, alkali metal, NH4 or NR4 (pref. H); R is lower alkyl; m = 1-2; z = 1-3; and the fluoroalkyl gps. are linear). The ester mixts. are esp. useful as oil-repellant finishes for paper and other cellulosic packaging materials. The ester mixts. can be prepd. by reacting a fluorinated linear alcohol with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide in the presence of an alkali catalyst (US 2, 723, 999), and reacting the product in a molar ratio of 2-3.5:1 with POCl3. For use as na oil repellant, the ester mixt. is pref. formulated as a 0.1-10 (esp. 0.5-2) wt. % soln. in H2O and/or an organic solvent. |
