Benzyl alcohol is prepd. by electrochemical redn. of benzoic acid using a mixt. of benzoic acid and 10-50%, esp. 20-30% H2SO4 with insertion of a cathode with greater surface and higher hydrogen over-voltage. Increased yields are obtd. since the process does not require the addn. of EtOH which leads to ester formation. |
