abstract The present invention relates to a method for producing a carbon-containing layer system, in particular for increasing the wear resistance of components, and to an apparatus for carrying out the method. In the process, an amorphous carbonaceous layer is deposited by plasma deposition, first a diamond layer and then, forming a transition layer. The layers are sequentially deposited without interrupting the vacuum and the continuous or pulsed plasma required for the layer deposition between the deposition of the layers. The combination of the two layers in conjunction with the deposition technique used allows the production of layer systems, which lead to a high wear resistance of the components.
