abstract Disclosed are methods of increasing transgene expression in chloroplasts, as well as improved transgenes so produced and methods for their use in the treatment of disease. Specifically, the method includes analyzing the native sequence of a nucleic acid encoding a protein of interest, and replacing codons in the sequence with codons that are preferentially used in the psbA gene of higher plant chloroplasts.
