Antifouling coatings fabricated from polymers coated with ionic species |
abstract |
Provided herein is an antifouling coating comprising: a continuous matrix comprising a first component; a plurality of inclusions comprising a second component, wherein the first component is a surface energy a low surface energy polymer, and the second component is a hygroscopic material comprising one or more ionic species. The low surface energy polymer and the hygroscopic material are chemically linked ionically or covalently, such as in segmented copolymer compositions comprising fluoropolymer soft segments and ionic species contained in these soft segments. The continuous matrix and the inclusions form a lubricious surface layer in the presence of humidity. Experimental data for the coefficient of friction of various sample coatings are given. Incorporation of ionic species into the polymer chain backbone increases the hygroscopic behavior of the overall structure. Improvements in lubrication enable the removal of material from surfaces using the natural motion of an automobile or spacecraft. |
