abstract The present invention provides a coated nickel hydroxide powder which is suitable for use as a positive electrode active material for alkaline secondary batteries, by ensuring the uniformity and adhesion of a nickel hydroxide powder when a coating mainly composed of cobalt oxyhydroxide is formed on the particle surface of the nickel hydroxide powder. The pH of a suspension of nickel hydroxide powder is maintained at 8 to 11.5, and the ratio ρ/(d × v) of the feeding speed ρ of a cobalt salt aqueous solution to the product of the feeding width d of the cobalt salt aqueous solution and the flow velocity v of the suspension in the contact portion in the direction perpendicular to the flow direction of the suspension is controlled to 3.5 × 10 ‑4 mol/cm 2 Then, an aqueous cobalt salt solution and an aqueous alkaline solution are supplied to coat the surface of the nickel hydroxide particles with cobalt hydroxide. Then, the pH of the slurry of the cobalt hydroxide-coated nickel hydroxide powder is controlled to 12.5 or more, and oxygen is supplied so that the total amount of oxygen supplied is 30L/mol or more relative to the molar amount of cobalt in the coating, thereby oxidizing the cobalt hydroxide.
