titleOfInvention | membrane for separation |
abstract | The present invention relates to composite membranes for gas separation and/or nanofiltration of feed stream solutions comprising solvents and dissolved solutes and exhibiting preferential retention of solutes. Composite membranes include a separation layer that is inherently microporous. The separation layer is suitably formed on the carrier film by interfacial polymerization. Suitably, at least one of the monomers used in the interfacial polymerization should have a concavity, resulting in a network polymer with interconnected nanopores and a membrane with enhanced permeability. The carrier film can optionally be impregnated with conditioning agents and can optionally be stabilized in organic solvents, especially in polar aprotic solvents. The top layer of the composite membrane is optionally capped with functional groups to alter the surface chemistry. Composite membranes can be cured in an oven to enhance retention. Finally, the composite membrane can be treated with an activation solvent prior to nanofiltration. |
