abstract Silane-based coating preparations provide stable coatings on metallic and non-metallic surfaces. A typical composition may contain one silane or a mixture of silanes, such as methyltrimethoxy silane and phenyltrimethoxy silane. Coating compositions may be in formulations with either acidic or basic catalysts, the latter being particularly suitable for coating steel substrates. Coatings for food and beverage containers, for car glazes, for HVAC system surfaces, for alkali metal silicates, concrete and the like are described. Preparative coating compositions containing two or more polyfunctional organosilanes, but not monofunctional silanes, provide firmly adhering preparative coatings for corrosion-resistant metals that adhere very well to polyurethane, epoxy and other resin-based finishes. coating compositions provide durable, corrosion resistant coatings on metal and non-metal surfaces. Primer coating compositions which include two or more polyfunctional organosilanes but no monofunctional organosilanes provide strongly adherent corrosion resistant primer coatings for metals and are very adherent to polyurethane, epoxy and other resin topcoats.
