abstract A NEW PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF ALPHA- (1-METHYLETHYL) -3,4-DIMETHOXYBENZENE-ACETONITRYL, of formula: reacted with isobutyryl-3,4-dimethoxybenzene, of formula: with alpha-halogen ester, of formula X-CH2-COOR VII in wherein X represents a halogen atom and R represents an unbranched or branched alkyl radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, in the presence of an alkaline agent selected from an alkali metal alkoxide of the formula R1O-Me + VIII in which Me + represents an alkali metal cation , and R 1 is an alkyl radical, unbranched or branched, containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, sodium amide or sodium hydride, optionally in the presence of a solvent selected from an aromatic hydrocarbon and an unbranched or branched alcohol, and containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof, for about 1 to about 24 hours, at a temperature between -25 ° C and the boiling point of the reaction mixture, to form an ester of glycidic acid, of formula wherein R has the above meaning , alkali-hydrolyzes, at a temperature between about 0 ° C and the boiling point of the reaction mixture, for about 1 to about 12 hours, to give an alkaline epoxy acid salt of formula wherein Me + has the meaning given above, which compound of formula IV decarboxylate, at a temperature between about 20 ° C and the boiling point of the mixture, for about 1 to about 16 hours, to give alpha- (1-methylethyl) -3,4-dimethoxybenzeneacetaldehyde, of formula, said aldehyde, of formula V, treated with hydroxylamine hydrochloride, at a temperature between about 0 ° C and the boiling point of the reaction mixture, for about 0.5 to about 16 hours, to give alpha- (1-methylethyl) -3,4-dimethoxybenzeneacetaldoxime, formula and said oxime of formula VI is dehydrated to give the desired nitrile of formula I.
