abstract | A process for the preparation of purine derivatives of the formula I in which jR1 is hydrogen, CH3CO or higher acyl and R3 is hydrogen, CH3CO or higher acyl, PhCO, CH2Ar as benzyl or substituted benzyl, and Z OH, hydrogen or halogen, characterized in that a compound of formula II wherein R is CH 3 CO, isobutyryl or higher acyl and R 1 and R 3 have the above meaning other than hydrogen; selectively unblocking with weak bases or acids or in the presence of a catalyst into a compound of formula I in which Z = OH, R1 has the meaning of formula I and R3 has the meaning of formula I except for hydrogen which is optionally hydrogenated to a compound of formula I in which Z is halogen is obtained, which is optionally converted by hydrolysis or photochemical dehalogenation to compound I in which Z is hydrogen, or optionally compound I in which Z is OH, R1 has in formula I the meaning given and R3 also having the meaning given in formula I but not hydrogen or benzyl are blocked with a base into a compound of formula I in which R1 = R3 is hydrogen.
