abstract A writing instrument (A) having an ink tank portion (31) for storing ink (11) therein, characterized in that the ink (11) in the ink tank portion (31) comprises an ink component (12), and a layer separation component (13) separated in the form of layer from the ink component (12), both the specific gravity and surface tension of the layer separation component (13) being lower than those of the ink component (12), the ink (11) being able to move freely in the interior of the ink tank portion (31). Owing to these characteristics, a writing instrument and a liquid application device in which a remaining amount of the ink can be visually recognized are provided.
