titleOfInvention Microplate scanning read head
abstract A scanning head assembly (101) is provided, the scanning head (101) suited for use with instruments that characterize the absorption, fluorescence, and/or luminescence properties of one or more samples contained within a sample plate or microplate (109). The scanning head assembly (101) is coupled to a pair of scanning mechanisms (201, 203), thereby allowing the head assembly (101) to be raster scanned along both the x-axis (119) and y-axis (121). Although the scanning preferably follows a serpentine pattern (501), other scan patterns can be utilized. Single or multiple measurements can be made per sample well (123), multiple measurements either being reported individually or averaged together. Although the scanning head assembly (101) can utilize a variety of configurations, in the preferred embodiment the scanning head assembly (101) has a C-shape with the light source (103) and associated optics mounted in the lower arm (111) of the assembly (101) and the detector (107) and associated optics mounted in the upper arm (113). Preferably the optics associated with the source (103) include one or more optical filters (413) that regulate the wavelength of light radiating from the sample.
