titleOfInvention | Water soluble invert emulsions |
abstract | A drilling fluid and an invert emulsion fluid having utility for drilling, completing or working over subterranean oil and gas wells are disclosed. The drilling fluid includes a continuous phase that includes a preferentially-oil-soluble glycol ether which has a viscosity at 20 °C (68 °F) of at least 10 centipoise, and an emulsifier. The invert emulsion fluid includes an oleaginous fluid including a preferentially-oil-soluble glycol ether which is miscible in oil and is such that no more than 10 % water is miscible in the glycol ether at 20 °C (68 °F). The invert emulsion fluid also includes a nonoleaginous fluid and an emulsifier which is functionally effective to stabilize the invert emulsion. In one embodiment, glycol ether is selected from propylene glycol n-butyl ether; dipropylene glycol n-butyl ether; tripropylene glycol n-butyl ether; tetra propylene glycol n-butyl ether; pentapropylene glycol n-butyl ether; hexapropylene glycol n-butyl ether; heptapropylene glycol n-butyl ether and combinations thereof. The fluids of the present invention may also contain weighting agents, bridging agents, wetting agents and other components of drilling fluids that are known in the art. |
