A pigment dispersant comprising a product of neutralization of a polymer (A) comprising α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid constituent units wherein 10 to 99.99 mole % of the acid groups of the polymer (A) are in the form of an alkali metal salt or an alkaline earth metal salt, 0.01 to 5 mole % thereof are in the form of an organic amine salt, and 0 to 89.99 mole % thereof are in the free acid form; and a pigment dispersion composition for coated papers, comprising the dispersant, water and an inorganic pigment. The dispersant exhibits a lowered viscosity and an improved long-term stability as compared with those of the prior art, and is particularly suitably usable as a dispersant for inorganic pigments or suitable also for the preparation of pigment dispersions for coated papers. |
