titleOfInvention | Sheet material for core support |
abstract | A non-porous sheet (10) for bonding to honeycomb-type core structures (25) to be machined on a vacuum chuck (4) includes a woven fiberglass fabric impregnated with a nonporous epoxy-thermoplastic resin having a low melting temperature. The epoxy-thermoplastic resin comprises a blend of bisphenol-A based epoxy and phenoxy thermoplastic. The nonporous sheet (10) is exposed to a relatively low temperature for about five minutes to soften the epoxy-thermoplastic resin. A core structure (25) is placed on the softened sheet (10) and the sheet (10) is allowed to cool to ambient temperature to adhere the non-porous sheet (10) to the core (25). The core and sheet (25, 10) assembly can then be placed on the surface of a vacuum chuck (4) associated with a machine tool (2) for a subsequent machining operation of the core structure (25). When the machining operation is finished, the nonporous sheet (10) is easily removed from the core structure (25) by heating the core and sheet assembly (25, 10) slightly above ambient temperature and then peeling off the sheet (10) from the core (25) for reuse. In this manner, the core (25) is not damaged and little or no residue is left on the core (25) from the sheet. |
