A catalyst for the polymerization of olefins, prepared from (a) a transition metal compound, (b) at least one member selected from among clay, clay minerals and ion-exchange layer compounds, (c) a silane compound and, if necessary, (d) an alkylating agent; another catalyst therefor, prepared from (a) a transition metal compound, (b) at least one member selected from among clay, clay minerals and ion-exchange layer compounds, (c) a silane compound, and, if necessary, (d) an alkylating agent and (e) an organoaluminum compound; and processes for the production of olefin polymers or styrene polymers, characterized by homo- or co-polymerizing one or more olefin monomers or one or more styrene monomers in the presence of the catalyst. The catalysts do not require the use of a large amount of aluminoxanes, exhibit high activity, and can give high-quality olefin polymers reduced in the residual metal content or high-stereoregularity styrene polymers at high efficiency industrially advantageously. |
