abstract A medical/dental device (1) is provided which includes a body (3) having a hollow sleeve (5), and a head (7) at an end of the sleeve (5). The head (7) defines an upwardly opening chamber which receives a chuck (13). The chuck includes a bur tube (41) which removably receives a medical/dental tool (15) of the latch shaft type, and a push botton actuator (95) to release the shaft (15) from the bur tube (41). The bur tube (41) includes a flexible arm (65) which extends above the bur tube's upper surface (51), and an inwardly extending finger (77) positioned to engage the groove (21) of the shaft (17). A resilient member (56) (preferably a leaf spring) is received in a transverse slot (54) formed in the top of the tube body (42), and is retained in place by a retainer key (57). The shoulder (20) of the latch type bur (17) abuts the bottom of the spring (56) to reduce axial play of the bur, and to allow for use of non-standard burs.
