abstract High purity protein A is recovered from protein A preparations by loading an ion exchange column by passing a Protein A preparation over the column so that Protein A will bind to a cation exchange resin, washing the loaded column with a buffer solution which elutes certain impurities but not the Protein A, and eluting the column with a buffer solution which elutes the Protein A but not remaining impurities. The Protein A can be easily recovered from Protein A preparations that do not use any human or animal components or by-products. The protein A purified by the invention process is suitable for all common uses of protein A, but is especially well-suited for human therapeutic applications since it reduces the possibility of human and animal contaminants being present in the final product. The invention process offers the additional benefit of having fewer purification steps than conventional methods, thereby conserving time, labor, and the cost of equipment and reagents consumed. All reagents used by the invention process are environmentally benign.
