abstract A process for preparing optically active α-trifluoromethyllactic acid and antipode esters thereof, characterized by asymmetrically hydrolyzing a racemic α-trifluoromethyllactic ester represented by formula (I) (wherein R represents a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms) in the presence of an enzyme, an immobilized enzyme, a microorganism, a cell culture, or a treated cell each having the capability of asymmetrically hydrolyzing the ester; and a method for purifying optically active α-trifluoromethyllactic acid, characterized by recrystallizing the optically active α-trifluoromethyllactic acid prepared by the above process or a racemic optically active α-trifluoromethyllactic acid prepared by hydrolyzing the racemic ester prepared by the above process and recovering the formed crystals.
