A positive active material which forms a laminate with a negative electrode via a separator, the laminate being then spirally wound to form a group of electrodes. The active material comprises a lithium-metal composite oxide prepared by mixing at least one compound selected from among hydroxides, oxides, and carbonates of at least one metal selected from among transition metals, group IIA metals, and group IIIA metals with a lithium compound having a D50 of 5 to 50 νm and a D90 of not more than 90 νm and not containing particles having a diameter of not less than 100 νm, firing the mixture at 700 to 1000 °C for 2 to 30 hr, and pulverizing the same. The use of this material serves to improve the discharge capacity and cycle characteristics of a secondary cell with a nonaqueous electrolyte. |
